The Modern Soundtrack for Justice - "We Are" by Jon Batiste
Jon Batiste's "We Are" calls for solidarity amongst the poor, tells the privileged to speak truth to power, and cries for immigrants and prisoners, and that's just the first 3 tracks!
Batiste just won the Grammy for "Album of the Year" and it's well deserved. "We Are" walks the tightrope of speaking to the moment, while using classic funk, soul, and folk rhythms and making it fresh for a mainstream audience.
"We Are" is also a complete work that demands to be listened to in full, from beginning to end. "Freedom" works alone as a dance song, but takes on new meaning after you've heard the title track, "We Are". "Sing", which is placed at the end of the album is a response to "Cry". "Boyhood" to "Adulthood" - you get the picture.
Jon Batiste has painted a portrait of what it means to be a person with privileges in a country that oppresses some of its citizens to give comfort to others. How do you lament? How do you not lose yourself? How do you find love? And joy, and happiness? "We Are" is a quilt with multi-colored patches for all of those moods and moments
You can listen to and watch the album for free on YouTube.
