Week 1 - Made in the Image of God
Welcome to the start of your Justice Year journey. Conveniently, the Bible gets right to the point in Genesis chapter 1 and gives us the basis for honoring the dignity of every man and woman.
Theme Scripture
"So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them." Genesis 1:27
Justice Resources
As you meditate on and discuss the theme scripture, use the resources below to go even deeper in your study.
?Word
Imago Dei
Imago Dei is a Latin phrase that translates as Image of God. Imago Dei is the shorthand for the theology that all humans are created in God's image, and that truth is the basis for our worth and rights in society, not our wealth, ethnicity, gender, ect.
Because Imago Dei is based on Genesis 1, and the creation of humans, it is a doctrine that is honored by across Christina, Jewish, and Muslim faiths.
?Book
"Martin Luther King Jr. and the Image of God" by Richard Wayne Wills Sr. (Amazon)
This book traces the origins of Dr. King's theology, with a focus on how he interpreted the "Image of God".
You'll find references to many theologians, ministers, and civil rights leaders who impacted Dr. King, including Reinhold Niebuhr and Frederick Douglass.
I love this book because it focuses on what animated Dr. King to do justice, not just write about or debate justice.
